Max's journey into craft began in tiling — including time spent working in Germany — where an eye for precision, surface, and finish was shaped through years of hands-on trade work. It was as his tiling knowledge deepened that natural stone began to enter the picture. Working more frequently with natural stone materials, Max realised that benchtops were essentially larger shapes of what he already knew. It didn't feel like a leap — it felt like a natural progression into a whole new world of craft, product, and possibility.
That realisation sparked something. Stone benchtops opened up a creative dimension that tiling alone couldn't fully satisfy — one-off pieces, hand-selected slabs, surfaces that become part of someone's home for decades. Max found a genuine excitement in learning the skills, materials, and techniques that stone fabrication demanded.
What made it even more compelling was the crossover. Having deep expertise in both tiling and stone fabrication under one roof is genuinely rare — and Max recognised early on that this combination could offer clients something most others couldn't: complete, cohesive results across both disciplines without the complications of dealing with separate trades.
Maximum Stone was built on a simple principle: treat every surface as if it's going into your own home. Whether the team is working on a residential kitchen in Remuera or a commercial development in the CBD, that standard never changes.
One of the things Max gets a genuine kick out of is designing and making stone pieces that become part of someone's furniture — hand-selected, one-off pieces crafted specifically for that one person. No two slabs are the same, and that individuality is something he takes seriously.
Today, Maximum Stone operates from a purpose-built workshop in Kumeu, Auckland, equipped with advanced CNC technology while maintaining the careful hand-finishing that defines quality stonework. Hundreds of projects have been completed across residential, commercial, and hospitality sectors — each carrying the same commitment to excellence that defined the very first installation.
